Proctor Valley is named for 19th-century English astronomer Richard Proctor, whose widow, according to Lou Stein's San Diego County Place Names, arrived in the area in 1887. She planned to build an observatory on nearby Mount San Miguel as a memorial to Professor Proctor. The observatory was never built, but the valley was named for the stargazer. |
